Waar nu ateliers en kantoren staan, werkten duizenden arbeiders aan oceaanstomers en mammoettankers. En nog steeds is er scheepsbouw te vinden.
Voor fotografen was en ís het NDSM-terrein een dankbaar onderwerp. Vijftien van hen zijn in dit boek bijeengebracht. Grote namen uit het verleden als Cas Oorthuys en Frits Rotgans, naast hedendaagse fotografen als Marc Faasse en Jaap Scheeren. In this book, the extraordinary life cycle of the NDSM passes by in almost 200 beautiful photographs. The NDSM shipyard was once the largest in the Netherlands. In 1984, this pride of Amsterdam-Noord went bankrupt. From the slipways where magnificent concerts are now held, colossal ships once glided into the IJ. Where studios and offices now stand, thousands of labourers worked on ocean liners and supertankers. And shipbuilding can still be found there.
For photographers, the NDSM site was and is a rewarding subject. Many of them are united in this book. Great names from the past, such as Cas Oorthuys and Frits Rotgans, alongside contemporary photographers such as Marc Faasse and Jaap Scheeren.
