Het Noordzeegebied is belangrijk voor veel vogels: om te broeden, te overwinteren of als pleisterplaats tijdens de trek. Gedurende vierenhalf jaar reisde Sijmen Hendriks rond de Noordzee. Hij fotografeerde vogels en de landschappen waarin zij leven. De ene keer in majestueuze natuurgebieden met schitterende vergezichten, de andere keer in grimmige industriegebieden of kuststeden. In een dichtbevolkt gebied met grote economische activiteit lijken de vogels onbekommerd hun gang te gaan. Helaas is dat schijn.
